Every aviation communication in the world uses a single time reference: Zulu time. When an air traffic controller in London clears a flight to depart at 1200 Zulu, the crew in the cockpit, the ground team in Frankfurt, and the arrival team in New York are all working from the same timestamp. There is no conversion, no ambiguity, no "but what time is that here?" Zulu time is UTC. The Z suffix — inherited from the military phonetic alphabet for the letter Z — designates the zero meridian offset.
This standardisation exists because aviation has no tolerance for timezone ambiguity. A controller who transmits a clearance in local time to a crew whose aircraft crosses three timezones during the flight has introduced an error with potentially catastrophic consequences. Zulu eliminates that error at the source.
Reading Zulu timestamps
Zulu time is written as a four-digit group followed by Z: 1200Z is noon UTC. 0830Z is 08:30 UTC. 2345Z is 23:45 UTC — 11:45pm. The format never uses a colon. It never uses AM or PM. It never uses a timezone abbreviation other than Z. This rigidity is the point.
Converting Zulu to local time requires knowing the UTC offset for the relevant location and date — including whether DST is currently active. A crew operating out of New York in winter adds UTC−5 to get Eastern Standard Time: 1200Z is 0700 EST. In summer, with EDT active, it is 0800 EDT. The Zulu time does not change — the local interpretation does.
This is why Zulu time appears in METAR and TAF weather reports, NOTAMs, flight plans, ATC communications, and all official aviation documentation. The airport's local time is relevant for passenger scheduling. The aircraft's operation runs on Zulu.
METAR and TAF timestamps
A METAR (Meteorological Aerodrome Report) is issued every 30 or 60 minutes and contains a timestamp in the form DDHHMMZ — day of month, hour, minute, Zulu. A METAR beginning with 101200Z was issued on the 10th of the month at 12:00 UTC. No year, no month — the currency of the report is assumed from context.
A TAF (Terminal Aerodrome Forecast) covers a period expressed as DDHH/DDHH — from day/hour to day/hour, always in Zulu. A TAF valid from 1012/1112 is valid from the 10th at 12:00 UTC to the 11th at 12:00 UTC. This format crosses midnight without ambiguity because it carries the day number.
When reading a METAR or TAF, converting the Zulu timestamp to your local time tells you when the observation was made or when the forecast period begins — useful for visualising whether a forecast storm arrives during your departure window, your cruise, or your approach.
Flight Duty Period and rest requirements
Flight Duty Period (FDP) regulations — the rules governing how many hours a crew can be on duty before mandatory rest — are defined in local time by most regulatory frameworks, including EASA and FAA. This creates a calculation challenge for crews operating across multiple timezones: a duty period that begins in Tokyo local time and ends in Frankfurt local time spans a date boundary, a DST boundary (potentially), and a regulatory jurisdiction boundary.
The correct approach is to anchor all FDP calculations in UTC and convert to local time only at the point of reporting. A duty period expressed as 2026-03-10T22:00Z to 2026-03-11T10:00Z is unambiguous regardless of where the crew is based. Converting that to Tokyo local time (UTC+9) gives 07:00 to 19:00 local — a 12-hour duty period, with the date boundary removed from the calculation.
